His mother had suggested to go out for dinner today and enjoy an exclusive meal at Ruth's Chris Steak House. But his father had blinked at Casey and insisted that he loved pizza much more than a steak.
It was Father's Day, so his mother finally had given in and they had ended up at Pizza Hut. Casey was grinning all over the time while he enjoyed his 'Hot chili lovers' pizza. After dinner he would visit a baseball-game together with his dad. Well, he was not such a great sportsfan as his dad, but he always enjoyed the rare time together with him. Once his own firm had expanded his father could no longer spent as much time with his family as he would have liked.
When Casey heard the roaring of a car in front of the restaurant he startled. He knew this sound all too well. A GTO. Black with red stripes. Zeke's baby. How could he forget this? Zeke liked to come to Pizza Hut too.
Especially on weekends, when he was alone at home, with nothing to do than sleeping and watching cheesy movies. Because Casey had to be at home with his parents. He always had liked weekends - no school, no jocks, just he and his mom. Sometimes his dad too. They had a lot of fun together. Casey didn't mind that the others at school called him mommy's boy and little geek. Because he loved his parents. But since three weeks he hated sundays and loved school. Because of Zeke Tyler - the coolest boy in town ...
To be Zeke's project-partner made things at school easier. Even the jocks didn't want to clash with him. But more important was that every day after school he went home with him. Zeke owned a fantastic lab in his garage and they worked hard on their physics project - this was what his parents knew. But there was even more.
First Casey was sure to dream when Zeke out of the blue bend forward and kissed him. Right onto his mouth. Zeke Tyler - every girls crush at school - liked to kiss him. And more! Just one week ago Zeke had unbuttoned his shirt and had teased and licked his nipples. Casey felt nervous at first. This was so new and wonderful, but he was so inexperienced and Zeke seemed to know just everything. But Zeke had smiled warmly.
"Don't worry. We will never do anything before you're not ready for it," he had promised.
Zeke was the best boyfriend Casey could image. He knew, also his parents would like him - if they only got a chance to get to know him properly. But Zeke refused to meet them. Every evening he gave Casey a ride home, every evening he dropped him out at the corner.
"They wouldn't like me," he said.
"They will not allow you to meet me again!"
"My parents are not that shallow," Casey insisted.
"I can trust them!"
Zeke put his arm around his shoulder and kissed him slightly on the forehead.
"Good for you," he murmured.
Now here he was, ordering a pizza and a coke. Ignoring Casey, though he was sure, Zeke had seen him right in the moment he entered Pizza Hut. Casey stared over at him. Suddenly his pizza didn't taste so good any longer.
"Who is that boy?"
He barely dared to look up. He should have known it. His mother and her sixth sense. She always seemed to know when something was wrong with him.
"This is Zeke, my partner at the physics project ," answered Casey and suddenly he felt nervous.
Another inquiring look at Zeke who was just taking place at one of the empty tables at the other end of the restaurant.
"Ohhh! I wonder what he's doing here today .... alone. He should be at home with his father!"
This didn't go well. Not at all well!
"His parents are not around," Casey murmured.
His mother frowned.
"What do you mean? Did they leave him alone? Today? But it's Father's Day!"
Casey helplessly shrugged. How could he explain to his mother what Zeke had confided him one day? That the freedom that a lot guys at school envied him for, was not as great as they thought. His parents had never cared about him. He was grown up by nannies while they were jetting around the world. When he turned thirteen they decided that now he was old enough to stay alone for one week.
The week turned into two months. His parents only came back after a call from the police. Zeke had been caught stealing.
"I was hungry," he said.
His parents put him into a boarding school and disappeared again. At seventeen he returned to Herrington, grown up and determined to make the best out of his life. At least his parents sent a generous check every month now...
His mom scrutinized him anxiously.
"What's happened to his parents? I hope they are not ... dead?"
"No, they are not," he murmured.
"They are somewhere in Europe. A business trip!"
At least this was half the truth and it sounded plausible. Mrs. Connor looked shocked.
"But he's still a child! He needs someone to take care for him."
"He's almost nineteen, mom."
She still looked over to Zeke who took a hearty bite from his pizza now. Finally she sighed.
"Go and ask him to come over!"
Casey almost jumped.
"He can sit with us. And later he could go to the baseball game with you and your father. I'm sure he would like this. Every boy at his age loves baseball."
Casey gasped for air. Also his dad looked surprised.
"Ähm ... Meredith... You know, it's Father's day. I want to do something special only with Casey."
"Look at him, Frank!"
Her voice was calm as ever, but her eyes sparkled annoyed.
"He looks so lonely! What a poor boy. He needs someone who takes care for him ... at least for today!"
Casey's heart started to beat faster when his father cleared his throat.
"Well, of course you're right. It's a shame what some parents do to their children. Maybe...
What do you think, Casey? Would it be okay for him to come with us?"
Casey glanced at Zeke. Eye contact for a moment. There was a slight smile on Zeke's lips, wasn't it? But quickly he looked out of the window again, ignoring Casey and his parents. Casey knew his answer all too well. But the idea of being together with him and his dad for the rest of the day was tempting. Of course, they couldn't be out as a couple, but as friends. Zeke and his dad would get to know each other better ...
"Go and ask him, Casey!"
That was it. No matter if Zeke would like it or not, his mother was determined to invite him over and she mostly got what she wanted.
Although Casey had expected this answer he suddenly felt nervous. Zeke looked annoyed ... he never had looked at him like this.
"No! What the hell have you told them?"
He became louder. The first heads already turned in their direction. Casey swallowed.
"Not much, Zeke, honestly. But my Mom ... she is like that. She wants to take care for everyone who needs help. I guess, she's already taken you to her heart!"
"She knows nothing about me, Casey. Parents don't like me, especially not as a friend for their cute little baby boys. You're gonna ruin everything!"
Casey felt tears pricking in the eyes.
"You're gonna ruin everything! My parents are not like this. And you can't avoid them forever if you want to be ..."
He voice was just a whisper now, barely to understand.
"... together with me!"
Zeke did understand. He breathed in and out deep and slow, not looking angry any longer but sad. Finally he got up although he hadn't finished half of his pizza yet.
"I guess it's better to go now. Have fun with your dad!"
All Casey could do was to let him go. No one could stop Zeke Tyler. He knew, his mother was watching them and she would bother him with questions. She didn't mean to hurt him, Casey knew this, but for the moment he just wanted to hide somewhere and cry. It seemed to be over. He didn't want it to be over. It was just the beginning. He wanted ...
"Zeke! Wait, please!"
Casey followed him over to the entrance before Zeke could change his mind.
"I guess, I could ask them if I can stay overnight next weekend."
To Casey's relief Zeke looked curious now.
"For what? Physics project? Or a long movie-night?"
Casey bit his lips. He could only hope that his mother didn't notice that he had blushed heavily.
"If you can't think of something better," he whispered.
Zeke kept quiet for a while - a much to long one.
"This is so not fair," he finally murmured.
But his eyes were sparkling amused and for a moment Casey panicked that he would kiss him right here and now.
Zeke smiled softly, his fingers slowly tracing up and down Casey's arm.
"We don't need to do this, you know," he murmured.
"I know. But I want to be yours tonight!"
Casey turned his head and kissed him.
"And tomorrow, after lunch, we're gonna tell my parents that we are together."
"You are such a stubborn little shit!"
Zeke chuckled and pulled him back into his arms.
Then the world around them stopped to excist.
